Taking the Rave Out of Raving

I can’t speak for everyone outside the Seattle scene, but things here feel sad to me. It’s no secret that Seattle fancies itself to be in a venue crisis, few places are willing to let us into their buildings to party more than a handful of times. I don’t blame them. Ravers are destructive, and despite all our PLUR, there is no Respect for property. On top of all that, the police here are anxious to find any loophole to shut us down. Last week at Bubble Bobble the police bullied Studio 7 into signing some paperwork, and kicked a few hundred minors on to the street half way through the party. Despite these minors having paid full price, and the safety implications of leaving them stranded in Seattle at 2am.

When many started to panic, I viewed it all as a blessing in disguise. Before this venue crisis, people were content to keep going to the same 5 buildings every weekend for the rest of their lives. I’ve heard stories of the days before I started partying, when people threw shows that were wild and creative. Travis Webbwerx threw a party in a condemned building, and on a submarine. It was about seeing a cool place and thinking “We have to throw a rave here”, You turned something forgotten into a new experience for a couple hundred kids in bright clothes. I feel like this venue crisis forces promoters to do something other than dubstep and electro house at King Cat Theater

every.

fucking.

weekend.

So I’m hopeful. But there is one small side effect that I’m not proud of.
In an attempt to appease the renewed police crackdown, promoters are beginning to tack an endless string of rules on to their events.

No animal backpacks over a certain size (or just animal backpacks)
No led lights
No glowsticks
No pacifiers
No menthol anything
No hula hoops

I can somewhat understand a desire to separate oneself from drug culture, but banning pacifiers isn’t going to stop people from rolling face. Banning backpacks isn’t going to make the police go “Oh they don’t have cute backpacks, they’re upstanding.” Banning LED lights and hula hoops limits the way people like to DANCE for christ’s sake. I talked about this before when I talked about USC and massives, but to see this “rave without ravers” mentality translate to the small scene of hard dance really brings me down.

The word “rave” has almost always been synonymous with wild, desperate, madness. In the late 1950’s London, the term was used to describe the wild bohemian parties of the Soho beatnik underground. The word was later used in the burgeoning mod youth culture of the early 1960’s as the way to describe any wild party in general. People who were gregarious party animals were described as ravers. Yes we should respect our venues, yes we should respect the neighborhood that allows us to party, but the word rave has always meant something wild. It’s who we are, we will always be wild, creative, whimsical and with fantastic fucking backpacks.

So if I have to go underneath the freeway bridge to rave freely like they did in 1990, I will.

Oh shut the fuck up. If you sleep around and let every other guy (or girl for that matter) into your pants then you’re a slut and you’re disrespecting yourself. If you don’t wanna be called a slut, don’t be such a fucking whore.

Wow. Why do you care so much what other people do with their bodies? Unfollowed.
